Hi all! I am writing a mixed bean gravy soup recipe. I am writing this specially for my friend Claire who I hope will be happy to see this recipe. She liked this mix bean soup very much while she was here in Nepal.
I too like this one and prefer it with salad. This is quite easy to make and also looks great because the colorful mixed beans are really pleasing to the yes. I think it is good for health too.
Preparation time : 30 minute
(For 8 person)
- Mixed bean 500gm (scroll down for photo)
- Oil or butter 100ml
- Onion 300gm
- Tomato 500gm
- Fenugreek seed (methi) 1/2 tsp
- Cardamom 5-6 piece
- Cinnamon stick 2 stick
- Bay leaf 4 leaf
- Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
- Cumin powder (jeera dhulo) 1/2 tsp
- Red chilly powder 1/2 tsp
- Coriander powder 1 /2 tsp
- Ginger-garlic paste 2 tsp
- Coriander leaf for garnish
- Salt to taste
- Stock or water as required
We have to soak the mixed beans before we can actually start cooking. So, first be sure to wash and then soak the mixed beans overnight or at least 7-8 hours in cold water before beginning this dish.
I like to use generous amount of tomato and onion to make gravy. As you can see in the ingredient list also, I have put 300 gms of onion and half a kilo of tomato. Chop the onions and fine chop all the tomatoes.
Soaked mixed beans, chopped onion and tomatoes.
Now, turn on gas and place the pressure cooker on top. Add oil or butter. You can also use mustard oil if you like. But I do not prefer mustard oil myself. Mostly I use olive oil. Now, add fenugreek seed and then cinnamon stick and cardamom. Fry for a few minutes and then add the chopped onions. Fry until the onions turn golden brown and then add the chopped tomato. Let it cook and simmer for about 10 minutes.
Adding fenugreek seed ,onion frying and after adding all spices
After 10 minutes, we see that the mixture has begun to be little frothy. Now, add all the other spices and let it cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
Next, add the soaked beans and mix well. Add water and cover the lid of the pressure cooker. Cook until 2 or 3 whistles. Then take it out from the heat and let it sit for about 10 minutes or until the cooker lets go of the pressure.
The mixed bean gravy soup is ready. Garnish with coriander leaf.
You can serve this hot with plain rice, aloo paratha or chapati roti. I mostly serve with either rice or paratha. In case you are wondering how to make paratha, here’s an old recipe of mine about “palak paneer paratha” or spinach paratha stuffed with flavored cheese.
I hope you enjoyed this recipe. Let me know what you think about it, and send photos if you have made this one. I would be happy to know what recipe you would like to see in my blog next.
